3 Ways You Can Prevent an Accidental Overdose

3 Ways You Can Prevent an Accidental Overdose

It’s important that you use the right dosage of Over-the-Counter Products in Lexington, North Carolina. Why? It’s not just for the sake of compliance! Taking too little a dose can make the medicine ineffective while taking too much of it can put you at risk for an overdose.

But did you know there are other ways in which you may suffer from an overdose aside from voluntarily taking more than your recommended dosage? To avoid that, you should make it a habit to:

  1. Use your medicine as intended.

Even FDA approved generic medications can put you at risk for an overdose if you don’t use them properly. Say, for example, you’re taking both a cough medicine and a flu medicine together. But unbeknownst to you, they both actually have the same dose of a certain “active ingredient”. This means that when you take these pills together, you will unconsciously take double than the recommended dose!

Seems like a problem, doesn’t it? Well, don’t worry. It’s not that difficult to avoid either. You can always check in with your doctor or your local pharmacist to make sure that you can prevent this from happening in the future.

  2. Follow your recommended dose.

Seems easy, but how many of us are actually doing this? By taking the right amount to the drop, you can rest assured that you won’t be experiencing an overdose any time soon. But the question is, are you measuring your recommended dose properly?

Doing so can be fairly tricky, especially when you’re taking meds in syrup form. Why? That’s because one kitchen spoon might not always hold the same amount as what is intended. To be safe, you can make use of the dosing cup that came with your medicine or a dropper.

  3. Track your medication.

As the day goes by, we often find ourselves forgetting some of the things we should do, including taking our medication on time (or remembering whether we have already taken our pills or not). So, is there a remedy for this?

Of course! Even a simple action such as keeping a list on a notepad or your phone of the pills you have taken can help you stay updated for your next doses. As an added bonus, doing this can improve your medication management significantly too!
